1-day trip to New Market (Kolkata)

It was a Sunday of Mid September. After a long tiring week, I decided to rest the whole day. I did not have any shopping plans for the upcoming pujas till then. But my roommate was quite hyped about buying new trendy dresses.

He is a shopaholic, so he pulled me out of bed and told me to get ready. On insisting, I decided to go with him.

It was noon then, from Dumdum, we got a metro and got down at Esplanade. The streets were crowded as usual. The weather was quite hot. On reaching there, we had two glasses of “Nimbu Pani” to escape the scorching heat.

After that, we made our way through the footpaths. There were various kinds of stuff along with the street-side hawkers trying to sell them, a completely chaotic scene!

Every time we struggled to make our way through the crowds, the sellers kept calling us at the top of their voices, “Dada Ki Lagbe?”

I spotted a place where the vendor had heaps of canvas and sneakers for men. I decided to buy one in red and white shade, of course not the typical Khokababu type shoe!

My friend Sachin also had to buy one pair of shoes from Khadims. So after that, we reached there, and the crowd in Khadims was unimaginable. On reaching the first floor, I was amazed to see the shoes getting passed on from one salesman to another like a boomerang. Sachin managed to buy, and we had a quick escape.

We also passed through other stalls where vendors were selling wallets and apparel. Sachin bought two wallets just at Rs 600. I wish I could acquire his bargaining quality. If I was in his place, I am pretty sure I would not have managed to buy those for less than Rs 1000.

Sachin said that he was not ready to buy it for more than Rs 600, and the shopkeeper seamlessly agreed to give it at 600 after a few negotiations by saying, “Thik Ache Dada Niye Jaan.”

We entered a few more malls, like Sriram Arcade and Hoffman, where Sachin bought a trouser and jeans for himself. Then we entered Hogg Market just for a few more stuff.

After 3 hours of strolling around the market, we were quite exhausted, so we decided to have some food, and what could be better than street food in Esplanade?

We had momos and Fuchkas along with coke. It was 5:00 PM then, the sun had sucked up almost all our energy potions, and we were tanned severely. So we decided to end our marketing there, packed Nizams Biriyani and roll for our dinner, and set out for home.

Finally felt relieved after reaching the metro station. At around 7:30 PM, we stepped into our home!

New Market is not just a market but a meeting point for people of different cultures, religions, and places. It has become a brand name instead. Every time I go, my eyes are set on several fancy things. A myriad of things can be found in the New Market area.

Here vendors sell daily accessories, apparel, shoes, handbags, wallets, clothes, and home accessories. One can also see several decorative items, toys, and many more here.

An array of shops with junk jewelry, cosmetics, adorable Jhumkas, and clothing looks quite attractive and attracts crowds of young ladies and women. Bargaining with the vendors is a common scenario here.

Lastly, the aroma of the delectable street food draws almost all the visitors to the street-side food stalls. You can watch vendors toss their Woks to make mouth-watering pasta and Chowmein here. So don’t miss an opportunity to have these unique street-side foods in Esplanade.
