Her husband Babu Rajchandra Das was also a renowned zamindar of Kolkata during that time. In exchange for this favor, the zamindar gifted one of his biggest gardens located on the banks of Hooghly to the governor and his sister.

Burmese Pagoda at Eden Gardens Park

Eden Gardens Park’s main attraction is a stunning pagoda that was imported from Burma. It was rebuilt here in 1856 after the Anglo-Burmese war in 1854. Lord Dalhousie, who was governor-general of British India from 1848 to 1856, visited Burma in 1853 and took the pagoda back to India with him.

The pagoda showcases the Tazoung style of architecture from Prome, Burma. Inside the temple, there is a statue of Lord Buddha. The pagoda is surrounded by intricate wood carvings and statues of mythical creatures. One of these creatures is an alligator, whose statue is also near the pagoda.

The pagoda was shipped to Calcutta piece by piece and was reassembled in the garden by Burmese craftsmen over three months in 1856 – October, November, and December.
