Jayanti (Dooars) West Bengal – Attractions, Best Time To Visit

Jayanti is a quaint hamlet situated in West Bengal’s Alipurduar district. The place is just 30 kilometers away from Alipurduar town and is often referred to as the ‘Queen of Dooars.’

The charming small village is placed along the Jayanti River and borderlines the Buxa Forest. The Jayanti River flows between the Bhutan Hills on the eastern side and the Jayanti Hills and Jayanti Village on the western side. The interesting fact is that the village is one of the oldest ones in the Dooars region.

I visited this place during my Dooars trip and it is truly an incredible place to be at. While visiting the place, you can witness the old charms along with the vibrant nature winding around.

In this article, you will get to know the following points about Jayanti,

Let’s see each of these points in detail.

History of Jayanti

Jayanti was one of the major hubs of the tea and mining industry in the Indian Subcontinent during British rule, playing a crucial role in bolstering the economy of British India.

As the local industries flourished, it became difficult for the Britishers to supply their product and materials. To tackle this the Britishers started the construction of the Jayanti Railway commenced in 1901 with the approval of Nripendra Narayan, the Mahajan of Cooch Behar.

They had begun constructing a railway bridge made of steel over the river Jayanti to transport the Dolomites. Later, after India’s independence, this infrastructure supported the launch of a passenger train service, operating on a fixed schedule between Alipurduar and Jayanti.

This was a historic railway service that was eventually stopped when the Buxa Tiger Reserve was announced. The steel bridge still stands there but in a ruined condition. The bygone era winds around the site still today and helps us to breathe in the essence.

Natural beauty of Jayanti

The beauty of Jayanti is truly mesmerizing. Here, the whimsical nature wraps the village and the ecology is stunning. The flourishing dense forest, diverse wildlife, and the vibes around the place feel magical.

The melody of the gushing Jayanti River rhythmically resonates with the rustling leaves and the chirping of the birds. This natural symphony is on point and hits right while the cool relaxing breeze blends with the fragrance of the place and delighting the senses.

Along the river’s edge, a pristine bed of white pebbles elevates the natural beauty. The rolling hills are dotted with trees and stretch as far as the eyes can see. The village can be small but the wilderness it shows off is more marvelous than one could imagine. The dazzling sun and the clear sky make it a piece of paradise. In a gist, Jayanti is picture-perfect.
