History of Jayanti

Jayanti was one of the major hubs of the tea and mining industry in the Indian Subcontinent during British rule, playing a crucial role in bolstering the economy of British India.

As the local industries flourished, it became difficult for the Britishers to supply their product and materials. To tackle this the Britishers started the construction of the Jayanti Railway commenced in 1901 with the approval of Nripendra Narayan, the Mahajan of Cooch Behar.

They had begun constructing a railway bridge made of steel over the river Jayanti to transport the Dolomites. Later, after India’s independence, this infrastructure supported the launch of a passenger train service, operating on a fixed schedule between Alipurduar and Jayanti.

This was a historic railway service that was eventually stopped when the Buxa Tiger Reserve was announced. The steel bridge still stands there but in a ruined condition. The bygone era winds around the site still today and helps us to breathe in the essence.
