The Lalji Temple was built in 1658 CE, during the reign of King Bir Singha II, who ruled the kingdom from 1656 to 1660.

He was one of the Malla kings who were devout followers of Vaishnavism, a sect of Hinduism that worships Lord Vishnu and His incarnations, especially Lord Krishna. Therefore, this splendid temple was dedicated to Radha-Madhav.

The Malla kings were responsible for the cultural and religious revival of Bishnupur after the end of the Mughal rule.

In front of the temple, there is a dancing hall, and to the west, there is a tower dedicated to Raghunath, another form of Lord Vishnu. The entire structure is made of laterite and is enriched with terracotta carvings. All the carvings you see depict scenes belonging to history and Hindu Mythology.

The exterior yard is separated from the interior by a wall that displays the smallish Panchatantra Temple of the Kameshwar Shiva. It contains an inscription dating back to 1655 AD. On the east side of the wall, there is a gateway that leads to the temple.
