The festival of Holi is celebrated as BASANTA UTSAV in West Bengal. It will be held on 7th March this year. It is celebrated to welcome the Spring season – the season of Hope. The Basanta Utsav means the “Celebration of Spring”.

The beautiful tradition of celebrating the spring festival in Bengal was first started by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore at Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan.

Viswa Bharati University may organise Basanta Utsav on 3rd March this year. Although, anyone other than university teachers, students, and staff will not be allowed.

However, nothing is yet confirmed by the authorities.

The Dol Utsav usually starts early morning. There are a lot of dance performances and other cultural events.

The Basanta Utsav 2023 will take place on the Day of Dol, but this time the venue is not yet confirmed by the administration. Dol Utsav may take place in the Viswa-Bharati University, or the Poush Mela Maidan.

How to reach Santiniketan Dol Utsav 2023

Shantiniketan is at a distance of 163 km approx from Kolkata. It takes 4 hrs to reach via GT Road. It is at a distance of 53 km from Durgapur and takes a maximum of 2 hrs to reach via Bolpur, Kabi-Jaydev Road.

From Kolkata, Shantiniketan, Bolpur can be easily reached by bus or train. There are buses from Kolkata as well as Durgapur and are available at nominal prices.

There are plenty of trains from Howrah & Sealdah Railway stations to Bolpur. Rampurhat Express, Kaviguru Express, Saraighat express, and Shantiniketan Express are a few of them.

You can reach on the day of the festival by starting your journey early morning at about 5 AM or you can travel there the previous day and can accommodate yourself in any guest house or hotel there.

Where to stay at Santiniketan for Basanta Utsav 2023

If you want to see the Basanta Utsav from the beginning, which starts at 9 AM, you might have to reach Santiniketan the previous day and stay the night there.

You can accommodate yourself in any guest house or hotel there. There are plenty of Hotels and Guest Houses. You have to book them in advance as there are hardly any available to book after reaching.

About the Basanta Utsav Celebrations at Santiniketan

The cultural program is mainly organized by the Students of Viswa-Bharati University. Students of the University wear yellow traditional attires.

The atmosphere is vibrant, the air gets filled up with shades of red, blue, green, yellow, and pink. With the advancement of spring Shantiniketan gears up to add charm to the Basanta Utsav. There is a play of colors everywhere, women wear garlands of flowers mainly made of Palash and Krishnachura flowers.

The events start with various cultural programs with songs of Rabindranath Tagore. Little Kids also take part in this function making the atmosphere more melodious.

A handful of abir or Gulaal is applied to friends and loved ones bringing a shining flame to the festival. Everyone there generally plays with abir or Gulaal and not with water (Pichkari).

On the campus ground, students enjoy themselves by creating a musical environment with mouth organs and flutes. One of the main attractions of the event is the “Bauls”.

They add enthusiasm to the minds of the youth with their mesmerizing voice along with their one-stringed instrument known as the “Ektara” or the “one-stringed instrument”.

Where else to visit near Santiniketan?

One of the main places o visit Shantiniketan is to visit Khowai Mela or Sonajhuri which is a local market at Khowai where local beautiful handicrafts are displayed.

Folk dances and local dances are showcased and songs are sung to make the festival more merrymaking.
