History of Lepchajagat

The history of Lepchas or the Lepcha Bustee came to be known in 1800 when twenty Lepcha families started to settle in a road between Sukhiyapokhri and Ghoom.

The members of the Lepcha community moved to Darjeeling in search of work when the new tea estates started to flourish around Darjeeling.

Road to Lepcha Jagat

Today if you visit Darjeeling and start a conversation with the laborer of tea estates, there are high chances that you will meet many workers whose ancestry is traced back to the Lepchas.

The plantation owners employed the Lepchas at low wages. These workers were also familiar with the highly wooded forests and the dozing mysteries.

The Lepchas mainly built their community close to the tracts of pine, spruce, and fir sheltered forests. And this place slowly came to be known as Lepchajagat.

How to reach Lepchjagat

The Lepchajagat is approximately 64 km from Siliguri. It takes almost 2.5 hours to reach Lepchajagat from Siliguri via Matiafgara-Kurseong Road and NH-10.

You can take pre-paid taxis from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) or Bagdogra and you can reach Lepchajagat via Hill Cart Road.

NJP to Lepchajagat Car fare: The car fare from NJP to Lepchajaagat can range from Rs. 3000 to Rs. 5000 depending on the season.

The five abodes of snow which mean the five peaks of Kanchenjunga can be seen from Lepchajagat. Lepchajagat is a place that is free from the fuss of the crowd.
