Ilish Bhapa Recipe (Bengali Style)
Equipment
- 1 Induction Cooktop
- 1 Cooking Pan
- 1 Steel Tiffin Box
Ingredients
- 6 pieces hilsa fish
- 3-4 tsp Mustard oil
- 1 tsp white mustard
- 2 tsp black mustard
- 1 tsp Poppy seeds
- 5-6 Green chilies
- 150 grams Sour yogurt
- Salt
- Turmeric
- Sugar
Instructions
Prepare the fish
- Wash the hilsa fish pieces lightly. (overwashing may remove the fishy smell)
- Add salt and turmeric and keep it aside for 10 minutes.
Arrange fish in a steel tiffin box
- Now in a mixing bowl grind white mustard, black mustard, poppy seeds, two green chilies, and a little salt into a fine paste.
- Now whisk the sour curd well with little salt and sugar in a bowl.
- After 10 minutes, place the fish in a big steel tiffin box.
- Add the paste of the spices and whipped sour curd.
- Add salt and sugar according to taste.
- Now mix everything well with the fish and arrange the fish inside the bowl.
- Now add 2 tsp raw mustard oil over the fish.
- Chop and arrange 4 green chilies on top and keep it in the closed airtight tiffin box for 10 minutes.
Place steel tiffin box in boiling water
- Now heat water in a pan and place a stand on which the tiffin box can be placed.
- Keep the amount of water accordingly so that the box is half submerged in water.
- When the water boils, place the closed box on the stand and close the lid of the pan.
- Reduce the heat and let the fish steam for 15 minutes in the boiling water.
Serve Ilish Bhapa
- Open the lid of the box and see the mouth-watering smell and unique taste of hilsa bhapa or bhapa ilish are ready.
